A minority can change the whole

Scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have found that when just 10 percent of the population holds an unshakable belief, the majority of the society will always adopt their belief. The findings were published in the July 22, 2011, online edition of the journal Physical Review E in an article titled “Social consensus through the influence of committed minorities.”
“When the number of committed opinion holders is under 10 percent, there is no progress in the spread of ideas throughout the system. ”It would literally take the amount of time comparable to the age of the universe for this size group to reach the majority,” said SCNARC Director Boleslaw Szymanski, the Claire and Roland Schmitt Distinguished Professor at Rensselaer. “Once that number …

Emergent change in Egypt

The Arab Spring is an amazing example of emergence in the process of change. This speech given by Riyaad Minty, Manager of Al Jazeera Network’s social media initiatives, shows how people using social media to connect and communicate develop the needed critical mass to successfully overthrow the government of Egypt.
Complexity theory and studies of complex adaptive systems tells us that the amount of connections between the agents or the parts is a critical factor enabling emergent change. In this speech Riyaad Minty tells us how Twitter together with Al Jazeera enabled (or facilitated) the Arab Spring.

For further reading I highly recommend Margreth Wheatly’s article on emergence and social innovations.

If you work with strategy

It is easy to spend a lot of time on the content of the strategy and less on the process. It is also easy to forget the questions that helped you to reach the answers once you have developed the strategy. The content and the answers are very important, but the process and issues that can create support and innovation are critical.

We at PlanB see strategy as a dynamic process and not something you create and implement – in a changing world there is a need for strategies (and strategists) with fast footwork. Precisely because our world – and thus our organizations – shifts so quickly, the strategy must be an involving process to get a long-term, sustainable impact.
Strategy can …

A change agent

Someone recorded this man with a cellular and uploaded the movie to YouTube. It became viral, more than 3.000.000 views over a year. Some of the viewers recognized the man and the festival where the movie was recorded and more and more uploads where added to YouTube.
Now someone invested time and energy to edit the different clips into one movie. A movie about a change agent.

The Popcorn Metaphor

After a long day at work, I decided to go home and relax with a good movie. I really enjoy watching movies at home from my couch, and at this time of year there’s something special about tucking in under a warm blanket to enjoy a good movie with the family. To complete the experience we needed…Popcorn.

Luckily, I had some microwave popcorn in my kitchen cupboard that I wanted to pop. I read the instructions carefully. “This side up”, “1500 W”, “3 to 5 minutes” and “stop the microwave when it doesn’t pop within an interval of three seconds”.

Case: The art of being number one – and deserving it

The large company was the market leader, but in decline. There were new competitors in the market. The company had to change, but how? Time was a factor – the change had to happen fast.
PlanB was hired to bring about the change.  It was important that the team should not consist solely of consultants, since the company needed to achieve profound and permanent change. The employees had to feel involved and the change had to be anchored and come from within the organization.
Employees were appointed to lead the work and were also points of contact. PlanB was a robust, but active support in the process. The team also decided to appoint change agents within the line-organization. Those chosen were …
